What is Broadband and what can
it do for me?
'Broadband' is an umbrella term for a number of high speed
Internet access options.
ADSL, Cable and Satellite* all fall into the Broadband
category, giving you a number of options for enjoying an
amazing online experience. You see, the thing that all
Broadband access methods have in common is incredible speed.
These are among the fastest ways for you to surf, share,
download, upload and play games online. Broadband is
an 'always on' service so that you don't have to dial-up
each time you want to access the Internet^,
giving you full use of your phone service. So you can keep
calling, chatting and faxing while you're connected.
Sound good? It is. So let's have a quick look at your
broadband options, and see why you'd choose one over the
others.
What is ADSL?
Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is the most widely
deployed form of DSL technology. Most homes and small
businesses currently using DSL technology use ADSL.
ADSL is a technology for transmitting digital information at
a high bandwidth on existing phone lines to homes and
businesses. Unlike regular dialup phone service, ADSL
provides a continuously available, "always on" connection.
ADSL simultaneously accommodates analog (voice) information
and digital (data) information on the same line.
Specifically designed to exploit the one-way nature of most
multimedia communication in which large amounts of
information flow to the user, ADSL is asymmetric - which
means that it uses most of the bandwidth available to
transmit information downstream to the user and only a small
part to receive information from the user. Typically, ADSL
generates downstream speeds of up to 8 Megabits per second
(Mb/s) - 125 times faster than traditional 56.6 Kilobits per
second (Kb/s) analog modems - and generates upstream speeds
of up to 640 Kb/s.
Unlike cable technology, ADSL provides dedicated bandwidth
so its speed and capacity are unaffected by how many homes
or businesses are using the service at the same time. The
precise speed of your ADSL connection depends to some extent
on how far you are from the central office (CO) of the
company providing your ADSL service. However, depending on
your location, there is a flavor of DSL for you.
What is SDSL?
SDSL. It's only four little letters,
but what a difference those four letters can make for an
emerging business. SDSL is a high speed Internet access
service that offers up to 30 times the speed of standard
dial-up access. Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) is
the latest high speed technology that uses your existing
copper telephone wires to provide high speed Internet access
at equal uploading and downloading speeds. Our SDSL takes
existing voice cable that connects customers' premises to
the phone company's central office (CO) and turns the line
into a high speed digital link. SDSL is the perfect solution
for small- to medium-sized businesses and home offices.
What is Spam?
The term Spam refers to unsolicited,
unwanted, inappropriate bulk email, Usenet postings and
MUD/IRC monologs. For the purposes of this discussion, we
will use the term Spam primarily in reference to email,
which is what it is generally understood to mean when used
in connection with the Internet. Spam is often referred to
as Unsolicited Bulk Mail (UBM), Excessive Multi-Posting (EMP),
Unsolicited Commercial email (UCE), spam mail, bulk email or
just junk mail.
How do spammers get my email address?
Through many means. Some companies you may have had dealings
with sell their mailing lists to third parties, spammers
included. Spammers also use “robots” to scour the Internet
and harvest any email addresses that they find. If you post
to newsgroups you are also at risk of spammers picking up
your email address and sending you junk email. To get
adequate spam protection and get rid of Spam, you really
need more than one email address. This is an essential
element of proper Spam control.
What is
Computer Worm?
Worms are very similar to viruses in
that they are computer programs that replicate themselves
and that often, but not always, contain some functionality
that will interfere with the normal use of a computer or a
program.
The difference is that unlike viruses, worms exist as
separate entities; they do not attach themselves to other
files or programs. A worm can spread itself automatically
over the network from one computer to the next. Worms take
advantage of automatic file sending and receiving features
found on many computers.
